Misdirected Calls

Considering that I answer calls in the middle of the night for a toll-free number, it's probably not surprising that I get some ... shall we say ... strange calls. I answer several lines, but one of those lines gets the most interesting calls. The line is drug & alochol related, but sometimes there is nothing drug or alcohol about the calls I get. I used to be bothered by the heavy breathers or the ones who said disgusting things. I finally decided to just let it be and hang up.

Sometimes, though, I sort of play along. One poor young fellow called, likely expecting me to hang up pretty quickly once he started his "story" of his best friends mom doing things to him. But instead of hanging up or saying something rude to him, I kept saying things like, "uh huh ..." and "really?" and "go on .. " He was almost instantly flabbergasted, didn't quite know what to say, and hung up on his own. I got a chuckle out of that one.

Another funny one was a guy who called a few times in the same night. I'd always answer my normal, "Help line, this is Michelle, how can I help you?" and he'd go on with some sick twisted story, and I'd eventually hang up. About the 6th time he called, though, I changed tactics.

"Help line, this is George, how may I help you?" not disguising my voice at all.

He stammered. "What?" he finally asked.

"Help line, this is George, how may I help you?"

"George!?" he was shocked. "You sound kind of feminine for a 'George'".

"I know, I get that a lot." I replied.

Silence.

"How can I help you?" I finally asked.

"Where's Michelle?" he demanded.

"Oh, she went home about 20 minutes ago. But I can help you."

"Is this really George?" he wanted to know.

"Yes. Really George."

"So you're like a guy, with a voice like that?" he was concerned.

"Absolutely. Is there something I can do for ya? Sweety" I asked as sexily as I could.

"Uh .. no. Thanks. I probably got the wrong number."

He never called back.

Some nights I look forward to calls like that ....

Cool story. I got an obscene phone call when I was a resident on call. I was so tired from sleep deprivation that I didn't catch on to what was going on for a long time. (No pun intended). Maybe I'll blog that story one day.
